Florence County Building Permit Application Suggestions

Each situation may vary slightly, and when it does, the staff at the Florence County Building Department is incredibly helpful—don’t hesitate to reach out to them! Please note that I have never completed the process as an owner acting as a contractor. This information reflects my understanding, not direct experience, so it may differ. The following information focuses on the process for a residential accessory building. It’s a starting point to help you move forward with your permit application:
Steps to Get Started
✅ Create an Account
Set up an account on the Florence County Building Department Portal. Florence County Planning
✅ Select the Permit Type
Choose Residential – Accessory Structure.
✅ Forms and Documents
There are 5 forms to complete and 4 documents to submit. Many of the form fields may not be relevant to an accessory/storage building permit. Refer to the attached sample forms if you have questions.

Florence County requires a site map. Use the Florence County GIS Map to find your parcel. Florence County GIS Map
Additional Information Needed for the Application
- Electricity provider
- Intended use
- Total retail cost of the building (before taxes)
- Foundation type: Slab on Grade
- Role of applicant: Owner and Contractor
- Square footage
- Nature of work: New
- Change of use/occupancy: Currently a vacant lot; proposed use type – Storage (agricultural, etc.)
Required Documents
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License, State ID, or Passport)
- Site Map (with name, parcel number, address, phone number, structures on site, location of the new building, and distances to each parcel line)
- Construction Plan (a rendering or drawing of your building, including your name, contact information, parcel number, and address)
- General Documents (provide a copy of engineered plans on a flash drive or printed)

- Zoning Form
- Plan Review Letter
- Restrictive Covenants Form
Submitting the Application
Although you can submit the information through the online portal, the application itself must be completed in person and notarized by the Clerk of Court.
